How many times have you felt your ISP wasn't allowing you to use the full potential of your network connection? I know I have felt that strange tingle quite often, as if I was being violated of one of my basic rights (ok, it wasn't that excruciating). On the process of getting a cure of this twitch, I have come across quite a few TCP/IP tweaking tips. Here are two of my most favorite ones. I'd try to be as non technical as possible because to be totally honest, I myself can be considered a total n3wb when it comes to Greek-words like "TELNET" or "SSH" :)
Totally awesome networking tweak no 1:
aka " Increasing Half Open Connection is Rad !"
Platform: Win XP/Vista (Win 98 is..umm..already patched, & there are better hacks for Unix/Linux)
Tools of trade: A patch by LVLord . Download Link 1 | Link 2
How and Why:
If you’re on XP sp2, your TCP connections are limited to a maximum of 10. This seriously hurts your downloading speed because it wont let you connect to a high amount of ip numbers. It is supposed to slow down viruses because their spreading strategy is to connect to a high amount of ip numbers, but it also cripples your downloads.
A nice way to fix this is to download this patch, it allows you to set the maximum allowed connections to any number you want. Any number between 50 and 100 is ok (more is NOT always better). - From Torrent Freak (cause I couldn't have said it better )
Once you've downloaded the patch, do these:
- Run the patch and select a decent number of Half Open Connections (I chose 50)
- Windows will prompt you "OMFG someone is trying to get jiggy with your system files, would you allow it?" select (hell) "Yes"
- Restart
- Increase the amount of active connections in your download managers, like Utorrent or Flashget.
Totally awesome networking tweak no 2:
aka "Open DNS is your best bud"
Platform: Windows/Linux/Mac (this hack is all over the shiznit)
Tools of trade: Your ole' noodle and a little help from Open-DNS
How and Why:
You use DNS every time you use the Internet. The speed of your DNS service determines how quickly websites load for you. That's why you want your DNS service to be blazing. OpenDNS is so fast because we run some of the largest DNS caches around and do it on our own high-performance network, and purists say "The higher your DNS is on cached dope, the faster you'll dissolve in acid (woodstock hippies rejoice)"
To enjoy the benefits provided by Open-DNS...do these:
- Select "Control Panel" from the Start menu.
- Click "Network Connections" from the "Control Panel" choices..
- Choose your connection from the "Network Connections" window..
- Click "Properties" button.
- Select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and click "Properties."
- Click the radio button "Use the following DNS server addresses" and type in OpenDNS addresses (shown in the screenshot above) in the "Preferred DNS .server" and "Alternate DNS server" fields, then click "OK".
- Restart your computer.
- Visit http://welcome.opendns.com/ to see if your setup was successful. It it is, the you'll see the welcoming message.
These are the instructions for a machine running Windows XP. A detailed instruction page on platform specific settings is available here. I also recommend opening an account with Open-dns as they are introducing some really cool features recently..for free, as in beer.
